Question by evandro: Interior Design Question?
I just moved in and I love the brick walls in my new apartment.
It is consistent from living room, kitchen to the bedroom.
My question is, my sister who gets the other room insists that it is “OK” to have a different wall design and/ or color to each of the bedrooms or rooms. I disagree. I see houses with different wall colors and i find them inconsistent and less tasteful. Is it acceptable? or a consistent wall color /design is much preferred?

I think your sister should be able to do what she wants in her room. You can always close the door (or she can) if you hate it. It is just a matter of your taste versus hers.
A house with different styles of rooms can be just as tasteful as a house with one theme. Also a house with one theme can easily be tasteless!
I don’t think either way is preferred. It is all a matter of individual taste.

Sometimes having a playful mix of different colours and style in a house can actually give you a nice result. Try to build a bit of consistentcy by having none at all.
Anyway, doors to rooms are usually closed most of the time rite? Unless u’re going to replace your partition walls with tempered glass, you’re not going to see the living and your room at the same time.
I have clients who delibrately want me to make each room a totally different feel and touch. Wat matters most is that try to imagine and match the colors first before starting out on ur painting job. It’s advisable to leave the ceiling white or a light colour. It’ll make the house look brighter.
I like brick walls too. I painted mine straw and had a light projected at an angle to bring out the texture in it.

I think it’s best if you both agree on what’s tasteful or at least come to a compromise.
Just be careful that when it comes time to move, you’ll have to leave the house as you found it (that is if you’re renting), if you own it, it gets challenging staying “neutral” when you’re about to showcase for sale.
Good Luck!
as long as the rooms are distinctly separate from each other, its okay to do different color pallettes. but if the rooms flow into one another with no doors between, then i think you definitely need to stay consistent. if she doesnt like the brick, i suggest to cover it with something that can be removed (fabric, shoji screens, vinyl wall panels) rather than painting the brick itself. if you plan to sell at some point (do you own it?) then the natural brick does need to be kept in all rooms making it more appealing to buyers.
